Have you asked yourself the question, ” How often do I need to change my oil?” Or, “How long will my oil go between oil changes?”
These questions can easily be answered by reading this post.
Back in 1996 I purchased a brand new model 1997 Ford F150. This was my dream truck, a 4×4 extended cab that I wanted to take the best care of possible. In doing so, I decided I wanted to use synthetic oil in the the engine. At the first oil change I switched over to an off the shelf leading synthetic oil.
After a few oil changes and a few thousand miles on the current oil change I started wondering, “How often do I need to change my oil?” This was in 1999 and the age of the internet was in full swing. That is when I learned of a company called AMSOIL Inc.
AMSOIL is a synthetic lubricant and filter manufacture located in Superior, Wisconsin. Since 1972, AMSOIL has manufactured high quality synthetics right here in the U.S.A. I had been asking myself, now that I’m using synthetics, how long can I go. When I found out about AMSOIL they claimed you could go 1 year or 25,000 miles on a single oil change. Even their severe service recommendation was 15,000 miles.
Since that day in 1999 I have come to learn everything I can about synthetic lubricants vs conventional (petroleum) lubricants. I started using AMSOIL products in my personal vehicles and recommending them to friends and family. I even became an AMSOIL dealer.
As a leading manufacture of synthetic lubricants AMSOIL has gone on to produce a wide variety of products including motor oils for shorter oil change intervals. Even though it’s most cost effective to using the Signature Series line and change your oil once a year, AMSOIL realizes that customers would like a choice. Some people for various reasons do not want to go that long on an oil change.
AMSOIL now has a 3 tiered line of synthetic passenger car motor oils (PCMO’s) for any oil change interval that a customer wants.
Some reasons people would like to change their oil sooner would be, warranty concerns, dealership/manufacture pressures, driving habits, personal skepticism, and lack of education or understand of how AMSOIL products work. In any case, customers that have a choice are happy customers. I tell my customers, that I do not want them losing sleep at night because they are going longer on an oil change than they feel comfortable.
Now with the 3 tiered approach, a customer can choose which product best fits their needs. Lets take a look at these 3 product lines.
AMSOIL Performance Line OE (Original Equipment)
AMSOIL OE line is designed for the consumer that would like a high quality synthetic motor oil at a reasonable cost. AMSOIL OE has a recommended oil change internal according to what the vehicle manufacture recommends in the owner manual (longest drain) Many of today’s new vehicles recommend between 5,000 and 7500 miles. Some vehicles come with an oil life monitor that determines the proper interval according to driving habits. In the case of a oil life monitor, change AMSOIL OE “when the light comes on”.
AMSOIL OE line comes in 0w20, 5w20, 5w30 and 10w30 viscosity. There is even a 15w40 OE diesel oil for late model pickup trucks that meet the 2007+ CJ4 oil spec.

Great oils, and three tiers to fit almost everyone’s needs!
I am so terrible about remembering to change my oil! I was pretty skeptical about only getting my oil changed once a year. After reading this, maybe it’s ok to try a happy medium with Performance Plus XL line… I think I will contact my Amsoil dealer and give it a try! Thanks for the options Michael!
Ive got a newly built Ford OEM 5.4 engine with the cam phasers locked out im using your signature series oil I’ve got approximately 6000 miles on it and the oil is looking dirty is that normal?
I think this blog post might answer your question. What Your Motor Oil Color Means
Hope this answers your question.
Also note, when changing over from another engine oil product especially lower quality products like conventional and off the shelf synthetics, the detergents in AMSOIL will clean the engine over time causing the oil to darken prematurely. We always recommend either doing an AMSOIL engine flush or doing a shorter oil change interval for the first few times in order to ensure any buildup that was caused by the other products are now out of the engine. You can purchase an AMSOIL Engine Flush
We bought a Nissan pickup back in 1996 and do regular change intervals every 5,000 kms. But today we seldom go or use the truck that often (less than 30 miles/month) and so we change the schedule to every six months. Is this change of practice okay? Your product is not available here in the Philippines and lately used synthetic motor oil given by a friend.Any thoughts on this.
Henry,
Great question. I would at least change oil once a year. It looks to me 6 months may be sooner if you are not even putting 1000 miles per year on the vehicle.
I am also an amsoil dealer. When I used it in my 05 cadillac cts all my valve trane noise stopped. I love the products and my customers do too!! Keep on keeping on AMSOIL!!!
Thank you for the comment. AMSOIL works wonders!
Just bought a Ram with 5.7 Hemi and plan to change oil every 6k miles or 6 months. Does the Amsoil OE meet Mopar criteria and would it be good for these intervals?
Bryan,
As long as the product is listed for your vehicle on the vehicle lookup guide it meets the specs. AMSOIL Online Vehicle Look-up guide BTW, AMSOIL OE Oil is a great choice for a 6 month, 6,000 mile oil change.
I drive for Uber and put 45,000 miles on my car in the past year. If I switch to Amsoil, how many miles can I go between oil changes? My Napa mechanic says all synthetic oil changes should be done at 5,000 miles but my brother in MD owns a pest control business and he told me he uses Amsoil and goes many more miles than 5,000 between changes.
We would consider a taxi type of service as severe service. In this case with our premium line (Signature Series) you could go 15,000 miles or one year whichever comes first. We would recommend doing an engine flush prior to changing over to AMSOIL as well as monitoring your oil levels at least every two weeks until you are sure that your oil usage is stable.
